One of the notional systems that manage the internet operation is a complex of devices that allow getting information about domains. DNS-servers are responsible for the support of addresses database exchanging data by hierarchic principle. DNS servers are the source of:
- data about serving nodes (SVR-record);
- IP-address corresponding to the site requested by user;
- information about email routing.
A special protocol is used for data transfer.
Currently DNS-servers have got the means allowing the control of integrity of all data passing through them (DNS Security Extensions). Cryptographic methods are used for checks, while the transferred information is not encoded. Also there was a new DANE standard integrated. It was responsible for the authentic transfer of certificates used for creating secured and safe connections.
If hosting and domain were purchased together from one provider, everything will work correctly by default. Otherwise they should be bound in settings. To do this some settings in hosting control panel need to be changed. A correct DNS-server (name server) for a hoster must be specified. Thanks to this a domain name will be assigned with an address, and it will be possible to get access to the information stored on hosting. You can find out the DNS-server address from the support service or check it in the email sent after registering account on hosting to your email address.
Setup and Administration of DNS-records on the server or hosting requires special knowledge. All required information is stored in “DNS Settings” or “DNS Management” tabs in domain control panel, but you need to be highly careful when changing these settings. If the data is put incorrectly, the site will become unavailable for users, and each next update of DNS-servers can be done in the interval of 12 – 72 hours.
Using DNS-servers has become widely popular in corporate networks built on Active Directory technology. This technology is more universal compared to previously used NetBIOS and WINS.
Administration of the network is much more simplified due to combining of domain and DNS-server controllers into one, especially when there are a big number of computers in LAN (Local Area Network). Such integration is possible in case of using server operating systems from Microsoft.
